Why we chose to build scopri.ai in Austria
The obvious move for a deep-tech startup is to chase one of the big hubs. We chose to stay - not because it is easy, but because a strong local ecosystem, deep engineering talent, and proximity to industry matter more than a famous postcode.
Built in Austria, on purpose
The default advice is to relocate to a big tech hub - we deliberately did not.
Austria gives us deep engineering talent, real industrial customers nearby, and a serious deep-tech ecosystem.
For a patent-discovery company, proximity to industry is worth more than proximity to hype.
Every deep-tech founder hears the same advice early on: go where the money and the noise are.
For us, building scopri.ai, that advice never quite fit. The companies whose problem we are solving - engineering and industrial teams drowning in patents - are not concentrated in one famous valley. Many of them are right here.
The default advice - and why we passed
Relocating to a major hub promises capital, density, and visibility. Those are real advantages. But they come with real costs: distance from the customers we serve, dilution in a crowded market, and a talent pool everyone else is fighting over too.
When we looked closely, the trade did not favour leaving:
industrial and engineering teams, are strongly represented across the DACH region.
comes from excellent local technical universities and industry.
in Austria is small enough to be close-knit and serious about deep tech.
What Austria actually offers
Austria is not a substitute hub - it is a different kind of advantage. A dense network of engineering-led companies, strong public research, and a deep-tech scene that takes hard technical problems seriously gives a company like ours exactly the environment it needs to build something real.
For a patent-discovery company, being close to the industry you serve is worth more than being close to the hype.
Proximity to the industry we serve
Patent discovery is not an abstract software problem - it is an industrial one. Building it well means staying close to the people who live it:
Real problems, up close
We can sit with engineering teams and watch how they actually search, decide, and get stuck.
Faster feedback
Short distance to customers means we hear what works - and what does not - without delay.
Grounded product
The roadmap is shaped by industrial reality, not by what plays well in a pitch.
That closeness is hard to manufacture from far away. It is one of the reasons the product stays grounded in how technical work is really done.
Austria produces excellent engineers, and the local ecosystem is small enough that trust compounds. People know each other, reputations matter, and serious technical work is recognised for what it is.
That combination - strong talent plus a culture of trust - is exactly what an early deep-tech company needs to move quickly without cutting corners.
Staying was a choice, and we keep choosing it. scopri.ai is proof that you can build an ambitious, globally relevant deep-tech company without leaving the ecosystem that made it possible.
Does building in Austria limit who you can serve?
No. scopri.ai serves teams across the DACH region, the US and Canada. Our location keeps us close to industry without limiting where customers are.
Why does location matter for patent discovery?
Because the problem is industrial. Staying close to engineering and IP teams means the product is shaped by how technical work is really done, not by assumptions.
Is the deep-tech ecosystem strong enough locally?
Yes. Austria combines strong technical universities, serious public research, and a focused deep-tech scene - the right conditions to build hard technology.
Will you relocate as you grow?
Our plan is to scale globally while keeping our roots and engineering close to the industry and talent that made scopri.ai possible.

Bewusst in Österreich gebaut
Was Österreich wirklich bietet
Schnelleres Feedback
Kurze Distanz zu Kunden heißt, wir hören ohne Verzögerung, was funktioniert - und was nicht.
Geerdetes Produkt
