How AI knowledge ecosystems give industrial engineering teams a second technical brain. Recap from the Plattform Industrie 4.0 breakfast in Alpbach.
A second technical brain for industry
A follow-up from the Plattform Industrie 4.0 practice breakfast in Alpbach, where - among digital twins, sovereign data spaces and Catena-X - we presented AI-powered knowledge ecosystems: a second technical brain for technology and industrial companies.
Plattform Industrie 4.0 · Alpbach
The ninth Industrie 4.0 practice breakfast, run by Plattform Industrie 4.0 with Standortagentur Tirol and Siemens, drew more than 100 people at the European Forum Alpbach.
Alongside Siemens, CANCOM, BMW and T-Systems, we presented AI-powered knowledge ecosystems for industrial innovation.
The idea in one phrase: a second technical brain that connects a company's fragmented knowledge to speed up innovation and sharpen foresight.
Industrial data ecosystems are moving from concept to practice. That was the theme of the ninth Industrie 4.0 practice breakfast, organised by Plattform Industrie 4.0 Österreich with Standortagentur Tirol and Siemens during the European Forum Alpbach 2026. More than 100 people from industry, science and technology attended.
The morning ran from digital twins to sovereign data spaces. Our contribution sat in the same theme, seen from a different angle: the knowledge a company already owns.
What a second technical brain does
Industrial and technology companies generate enormous amounts of knowledge - patents, scientific publications, technical documentation, CAD models and other engineering data. Most of it stays fragmented and hard to reach. A knowledge ecosystem uses AI to link that multimodal information into one connected system a team can ask questions of.
Support technical decisions
Grounded answers for the daily work of engineering, drawn from the company's own documents.
Enable strategic foresight
Spot opportunities and risks earlier, across the whole technology field.
Strengthen competitiveness
Turn scattered knowledge into a lasting, compounding advantage.
The session put our work next to serious industrial practice: Siemens on digital twins that cut commissioning time to a third; CANCOM's RecAL for circular aluminium; BMW and T-Systems on Catena-X and sovereign data spaces. Different problems, one thread - data and knowledge, made to work across boundaries. We took part as a partner of EIT Manufacturing East.
The knowledge is already in the company. A second technical brain makes it usable.
As Roland Sommer of Plattform Industrie 4.0 put it, the use cases showed concrete value and real relevance for industry. The recurring message was simple: industrial data ecosystems are not a future promise - they already create measurable impact.
For a company like ours, that is the right kind of room: people who judge an idea by whether it works on the factory floor, not by how it sounds on a slide.
Data ecosystems, in practice
Every talk pointed the same way - value comes when data crosses boundaries. Digital twins shorten commissioning, sovereign data spaces make supply chains transparent, and connected knowledge helps engineers decide faster.
A second technical brain is the knowledge side of that shift: not another silo, but a layer that connects the ones a company already has.
A second technical brain is the direction we keep building toward: connected knowledge that helps industrial companies innovate faster and decide with more confidence.

Was ein zweites technisches Gehirn tut
